Up to the 1890s, all brickyards in California were using the soft-mud method for making bricks. Both wooden molds and soft-mud machine presses were used, with the latter type increasing over time. The American Clay Machinery Company, Freese, Fate-Root-Heath, Chambers, and Bonnot were the more popular stiff-mud machines with California brickmakers. The Los Angeles Pressed Brick Company dominated the face brick market in southern California and, in 1916, established a large refractory products plant at Alberhill in Riverside County. The Stockton Fire Brick Company, which had 90 percent of the firebrick market on the Pacific Coast, established in 1930 the largest refractory products plant in the west at Pittsburg in Contra Costa County. In 1878, even the convicts at San Quentin Prison were employed in making bricks in their own brickyard, producing 6,500,000 that year.

Cities have launched their own inventories of seismically hazardous buildings before. A 1986 state law required local governments in California’s most seismically active zone to create an inventory of old brick buildings that can be deadly in earthquakes. Newly monied or simply middle-class homeowners, business owners, and government officials built in neoclassical revival styles, be they Georgian Revival, Federal Revival, Grecian Revival, or the elegant mishmash that is Beaux-Arts. In doing so, they embraced a style that had been used for decades by those those who believed in patriarchal American exceptionalism and white control of the Great Republic.
Maintaining the Restored Building
The house went through a succession of owners and was heavily vandalized by the 1960s, when it was scheduled to be destroyed. In 1966, it was saved from the wrecking ball when the Historical Society of Pomona Valley bought it. The mansion was restored as a museum, only to be severely damaged by earthquakes in 1990 and 2008. Around the time the home was built, the railroad was expanded, and its western terminus was moved to the town of Colton. This delivered an economic blow to Spadra, but does not seem to have affected Phillips’s robust business. The small community flourished, and by 1870 there were three stores, a warehouse, blacksmiths, and a school on the Phillips property.
The first and last of these an old-timer could visit without being paralyzed by the change of a decade. In fact, he would find things very much as they were twenty years ago … Spadra, three miles west of Pomona, was founded by W.W. The home place of Louis Phillips, who formerly owned the San Jose ranch, upon which Pomona is situated, is also here.
How Do You Restore a Brick Building?
Like the Sterns home, Sunshine Hall was also used in films, standing in for a Mississippi plantation on one occasion. Of course, these “democratic” buildings in Washington, D.C., and the original American colonies, constructed to signify liberty and equality, were built mostly by enslaved African Americans and other disenfranchised citizens. I headed into the rooms first, where there was a docent that greeted me and told me about the history of the adobe.
In 1924, Francis Montgomery built Sunset Plaza on what became the Strip, anchoring what was essentially a shopping center with four white Georgian Revival structures. Exposed bricks are making a big comeback lately but not so long ago brick houses and buildings were perceived as being old, outdated and in immediate need of renovations. Now, on the other hand, we’re beginning to appreciate the warmth and charm of a brick house and to find inspiration in its design. Why there is no doubt that the richest property holder in the county today is Louis Phillips, who lives so quietly out at Spadra … Phillips has for several years had the largest receipts of any business man in this part of the state.
The west façade is “penciled” in the style of the period, meaning that the bricks are painted and mortar lines are traced in white on top. The east façade on Olvera Street, although not originally painted, had previously been sandblasted, a process which destroys the outer surface of the brick, making it porous. As paint provides bricks with protective coating, they have been painted with the color which was first used in 1919. A 1983 archeological excavation beneath the wooden floor unearthed artifacts relating to the building’s history.
Phillips also lent a pond to Reverend Richard Fryer, the town’s colorful Baptist preacher, for baptisms. In 1874, Phillips sold a large chunk of his land (eventually around 5,000 acres) to developers laying out the town of Pomona. One of his properties, the Phillips Block on Spring Street in Downtown, would eventually become home to the legendary Hamburger & Sons Department Store. It was under this Second Empire roof, over 125 years ago, that the first American citizens of the Pomona Valley used to dance and dine in the makeshift ballroom. Once the center of the lost town of Spadra, the Phillips Mansion now sits forlornly, neglected by Pomona, a city that would not exist if it were not for the mansion’s original owner, Louis Phillips.
